The 19 Best Bourbons to Drink in 2021 July 2, 2021 by Chris Wright and Will Price

Bourbon, the Great American Spirit, is not as simple as one might think. Yes, its definition is writ in but a few sentences on the holy stone of Federal Decree: It must be made in the United States; its grain bill must include at least 51 percent corn; it must be produced at not more than 80 percent alcohol (160 proof) and stored in charred new oak containers at no more than 62.5 percent (125 proof). And yes, it is a blue-collar spirit, made by thirsty farmers, for thirsty farmers. But underneath these fundamentals swims a deep sea of factors — additional rules and regulations, hype machines and deceptive marketing, false myths and a boom that began in 2008 and is still going strong today — that make bourbon more complex than it seems. Sour mash and Bottled-in-Bond, non-distiller-producers and high-ryes. Where’s the thirsty modern man, farmer or otherwise, to begin?

For the Fourth of July, we wanted to celebrate what makes America great. And we also wanted a drink. Ergo, we went with whiskey.  Whiskey is not an American invention, but the best domestic iterations certainly have their own fanciful backstories and flavor profiles (and we canclaim bourbon and Tennessee whiskey as our own). Without spending too much time on a history lesson — though we suggest quickly familiarizing yourself with the Whiskey Rebellion, Nearest Green and the Bottled-in-Bond Act — we simply wanted to profile 50 American whiskeys we appreciate on this, our Independence Day weekend.

Uncle Nearest Distillery Celebrates Juneteenth with Grand Reopening – Welcoming 10k FansUncle Nearest Distillery Celebrates Juneteenth with Grand Reopening – Welcoming 10k Fans June 21, 2021 by Distillery Trail

Nearest Green Distillery located in Shelbyville, Tennessee closed its doors to the public and like the rest of the world went virtual during the Covid-19 pandemic. Very little happens by accident around her. It all happens with a purpose and goal in mind. In order to protect her employees and fans she closed the doors to the distillery early on in the pandemic with no plans to reopen until it was safe for everyone. Now, more than a year later that time has arrived and a date was picked. As someone that plans with a purpose, she picked June 19th which is now officially recognized by the United States government as Juneteenth.

Estimated oldest bottle of bourbon June 21, 2021 by Andrew Wigger

What is estimated to be the oldest bottle of bourbon is about to be sold at auction via its local owner, Rex Woolbright, Newberry florist. The bottle is up for auction at Skinner Auctioneers, and according to research provided on their website, “carbon 14 dating conducted in 2021 in collaboration with the University of Georgia indicates, with the highest probability, that the whiskey was produced between 1762-1802. The raw data was subsequently evaluated by the University of Glasgow and determined to be bourbon with an 81.1% probability of being produced between 1763-1803, which places it in the historical context of The Revolutionary War of the 1770s and the Whiskey Rebellion of the 1790s.”

What's the Difference in Types of Whiskey?

When you pour glasses of Buffalo Trace (bourbon), Dalmore (Scotch), Forty Creek (Canadian whisky), Bushmills (Irish whiskey) and Jack Daniels (Tennessee whiskey), then compare the looks of each, you might think they’re pretty similar.

The depth of the color may be close enough that a novice might think they were drinking similar spirits.

But there are more differences than meet the eye when comparing bourbon to Scotch or other types of whiskey. How do you know the difference if you’re new to bourbon?

Considering bourbon whiskey has reached its supernova point, its all-consuming legions made up of new drinkers and hobbyists alike, it is a little surprising that so little about the spirit known. But there are more fundamental questions that remain unanswered, too.
