And then I spotted an unopened bag of chopped pecans. Then my eye landed on my Wild Turkey American Honey Bourbon Whiskey.

Bourbon, America's truly homegrown spirit, is in the middle of a renaissance. Bourbon makers' revenue is up more than 40 percent since 2009, and the number of brands has exploded. Lots of trends have been credited for bourbon's resurgence, from the popular TV series Mad Men (they drank a lot on that show), to the slowing popularity of vodka, to an increased interest in locally produced artisanal food and drink. More than any...

According to a recent article by Jake Emen in Eater.com, Is the U.S. Poised to Run Out of Bourbon? dispelling the myth of a looming bourbon...

Wigle Whiskey bringing bourbon distilling back to Pa. May 22, 2015 by Bill Toland / Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

Wigle Whiskey, the young Strip District distiller known mainly for its ryes, swore it would never make bourbon. The bourbon market is hyper-competitive. Bourbon isn’t part of the Wigle ethos. There’s nothing “Pittsburgh” about corn-based spirits. But the law of supply and demand is hard to ignore. The supply of bourbon nationally is being squeezed thanks to bourbon’s exploding worldwide sales

OAKVILLE, Calif. — Napa Valley vintner David Duncan has been known to stick his head in an American white oak barrel to get a full hit of the vanilla-laden, fresh-baked cookie smell the emanates from the wood. In fact, his Silver Oak winery — which produces classic cabernet sauvignon from the Napa Valley and Alexander Valley — is so wedded to using only American oak (no French wood will suffice) to age its popular cabernet...

The Spirit of America May 19, 2015 by Wayne Curtis

‘We’re in the entertainment industry,” the CEO of a prominent liquor company told me not long ago. “It’s important we never lose sight of that.” Consumers shouldn’t lose sight of that either: Think of every liquor brand as a popular TV series—gin is a British import, like “Downton Abbey.” American whiskey is getting its “Deadwood” on, harking back to an American West full of apothecary-style bottles and dudes named Ezra, Elijah...

Women Making Whiskey: An 800-Year History May 14, 2015 by Lyndsey Gilpin

One evening in 1957, Marjorie Samuels took a seat at the kitchen table and firmly set down a bourbon bottle. It had been dipped in thick, bright red wax, and had dried after dripping down the bottle’s neck. The cream-colored label was hand-torn and carefully centered. Samuels proudly displayed it to her husband and three children, and then declared this bottle design the future of Maker’s Mark. Her husband, Bill Samuels, the...

Some Buffalo Trace Bourbons Remain Very Hard To Find May 13, 2015 by Nino Marchetti

Kentucky’s Buffalo Trace Distillery sits in a location sporting a fine distilling tradition dating back to the late 1700s. Demand for whiskey made from here has risen and fallen over the years since then as tastes in the drinking public have changed, with the most current trend definitely being on the rising side. This is reflected in a report released today taking about the Buffalo Trace bourbons, in which one learns most...

In bourbon country, a shot of scandal May 14, 2015 By Thomas Lake

FRANKFORT, Ky. — Not long ago, when bourbon was out of style, distillery workers helped themselves to the product and took it home in plastic jugs. Bourbon was just another drink — not very profitable but pretty good for sipping on a Friday night. Then Americans rediscovered their native spirit, and connoisseurs around the world fixated on a bourbon called Pappy Van Winkle. Demand skyrocketed, and Pappy turned to liquid gold...

Trying Out a Pair of "New" Bourbons With a Distinctive History May 12, 2015 by Nathan Mattise

Start-up distillers face a seemingly endless amount of challenges: everything from covering overhead costs and acquiring expertise, to navigating local law and standing out in a crowded marketplace. But the one hurdle no brand has an easy answer for is time. If you’re new and want to make something beyond a vodka or eau de vie (say, something like whiskey), the alcohol simply has to age. This is exactly where a pair of “new”...

Why bourbon’s incredible popularity might actually be a problem May 12, 2015 By Roberto A. Ferdman

Ever since 2000, lumber has been something of a sore subject in the United States. Growth in Chinese furniture manufacturing has undercut many domestic businesses, turning local hardwood production into more of an export-driven endeavor. And the housing crisis has put a clamp on what was, for decades, a healthy demand for kitchens and flooring made with wood. "It's been a very difficult industry to be in the last 10 years or so...

And yet, WA is leading an Australian charge with a raft of new distillers making their mark in the world's cocktail bars. Margaret River's West Winds Gin leads the pack, going from zero to hero in just five years to shock the spirits world when it won double gold at its first outing in 2012 at the World Spirits Competition in San...

Pappy v. Fireball: Two Hot Whiskeys With Wildly Different Followings May 8, 2015 by Jake Emen

Ask a stranger about his or her whiskey preferences, and expect to hear about one of two extremes. There’s Pappy Van Winkle—ultra-rare, outrageously overpriced on the secondary market, and with a legion of zealots flying its flag. Then there’s Fireball—a cheap shot readily available for whoever wants to knock a few back and have a rowdy evening, also with a legion of zealots flying its flag. How is it that two such drastically...

Bourbon leaders debate term 'master distiller' May 8, 2015 by Bailey Loosemoore

Less than two months into her new position as master distiller, Marianne Barnes was already having dreams about how her first distilled gin would taste. The product is still about a year off as Barnes and her partners — Will Arvin and Wesley Murry — continue to renovate the long-vacant Old Taylor distillery near Frankfort. But Barnes seems to already be living up to her new title, putting all of her time and energy into a new...

The Proof: Whiskies for warmer weather May 7, 2015 by Zach Powers

Every spring, it seems clear spirits surge to the forefront. Gin, vodka, white rum and tequila, silver or golden. This makes sense. Any of those liquors can be used to make a crisp, refreshing cocktail. Vodka, for example, mixes with dern near anything. However, I’m not willing to abandon dark liquor, no matter the weather. Sure, bourbon is the perfect fireside sip, but in the steamy South, there are far too few fires and way...

Mastering the Old Fashioned, One of the World's Finest Cocktails May 5, 2015 by Naren Young

Fitz seems like he knows his way around an Old Fashioned. He should. He’s been a daytime fixture behind the long piece of mahogany at Manhattan’s Old Town Bar on 18th Street for years. I am a little apprehensive mind you; this is hardly a temple to mixology and there are certainly several ways to screw up what is essentially a fairly simple and democratic libation. This working man’s tap room doesn’t pretend to have any such...
